She waited nervously at the bus station with her luggage. She kept glancing around for him and he was nowhere to be found.

Where is he? What if he didn’t come? Questions zoomed in her already worried mind. They have planned a future together. Both of them wanted to escape from their routine life and the dullness that surrounds it. So they decided that it’s time to take off and live according to their terms.

But where is he?

As she occupied the seat alone she thought that maybe it’s time for her to live life in her own terms after all.

She heard the doorknob rattling. She peeped through the adjacent window and there wasn’t anyone. But the doorknob still rattled adding to her nervousness.

It was just like the time she walked back home from work. She was sure that someone was following her, but no one to be seen. And this time, she wasn’t going to tell her suspicions with anyone else just to be called as paranoid.

And she went back to the bed with the unsettled feeling settling in her mind.

Though the house on the other side of the street looked just like any other house, Rachel always felt that something was off. The windows were never opened. Neither were the doors.

It was like that since the tragic death of the previous owners when the house went in possession of one of their distant relative, who liked to keep his distance with the rest of the world.

Rachel was terrified when she accidently caught a glimpse of a withered figure from her porch when the doors were seen opened for the first time.

Something is really off, she thought!!

It was way past her bedtime but she wasn’t ready to sleep, instead she shook sleep off her sleepy eyes and continued to read.

She closed her eyes and thought about the dreams, she’s having. Eluding them isn’t easy, she knows. That’s why she is keeping herself awake to stay away from what appears to be flashbacks and bits and pieces from an old film, haunting her peaceful nights.

And as her eyes saw the spooky moments once again, she got on her feet deciding that she will share the dream with her shrink in the morning to tackle it for good.

He stared out the window lost in thoughts. Dinner was all set on the table, as usual. By this time usually she calls out, “Is dinner ready, Dave?” He knew that today there won’t be any such voice finding way to his ears. He knew that the dinner table was waiting for her, in vain.

But he had to do it. If he didn’t then it means he is admitting to himself that she is gone. Setting up dinner for her was his desperate attempt to hold on to the last of memories. He knows, she is not coming back.

Priya couldn’t understand what the big deal was.

Her sister Shikha, was so fond of the library and the books there. Priya could see it in only one way – a building with lots of books in it, where the people inside couldn’t even look up to smile at each other.
“They are all immersed in those books”, she said. “As if they prefer to become the characters in the books than live the real life.”
“You wouldn’t understand!” Shikha shook her head.
“I would, if only you put that book aside and experienced your life to the fullest for a moment.”

“Life isn’t fair, sweetheart. If it was, then I would have been married to the football captain of the school, not to the science club head!”
“If she married him then you would be talking to your dad in prison now, honey, and I don’t think he is in a position to buy an iPhone.”
“And dear, don’t tell me that you prefer the timed visits than sitting here relaxing,” James said turning to his wife.
Lori smiles as their lips meet.
Christie scoffs at the conversation realizing her iPhone dream is not going to come true anytime soon.

“Hi.”
“Hi,” Grace said uncertainly.
“I’m Joe.”
“Grace.”
“I see you here every evening.”
“I haven’t seen you.”
“Yeah, I know. You never seemed to be present here when you were here.” He chuckled.

That was true. She came there every evening in memory of her deceased boyfriend, Xavier. That spot was their favorite meeting place till the day he died. She was always lost in thought when she got there.
“Would you like a cup of coffee?”
A voice from inside her said that it’s time to let go. Maybe, it’s time she thought as she smiled at Joe.

She looked at the art, puzzled. It didn’t make any sense to her. The stones, tiles, clock with numbers shattered, bottles – she thought it was garbage piled on a corner.

But it is displayed as art in the gallery. People are looking at this one in particular very curiously, very impressively.

Only she couldn’t understand why!

Probably it is like her marriage –  messy inside-out but for the outsiders it gave a curious element, with the way they managed to come off like one happy couple.

Yes, that’s it, garbage piled on a corner, impressing the viewers!

Lying Life

PHOTO PROMPT Copyright-Rochelle Wisoff-Fields

She was a broken tale, holding on to lies to live her life the way she wanted. Her parents were under the impression that she was in college studying hard, but she chose the world of music long back and moved in with the band she joined.
Living in a room filled with musical instruments didn’t bother her, as she saw an opportunity in getting closer to achieving what she wanted.
She hoped one day when she becomes a famous musician her parents would be proud of her. Yet her mind asked, “Will they forgive her for the lies?”
