What’s that one thing
I would
change
about myself?
I want to say
there isn’t any.
I’m good
as I am,
flaws and all.
Thank you very much.
A usual,
noncommital
answer,
showing off
an uncalled
expression
of self-love,
proclaiming
“I am enough”,
covering up
the bruises
and
aberrations
as if
they mean
nothing—
but are my proud jewels.
But
isn’t there
anything?
If I prod
a bit deeper—
oh, there are
many,
a less proud,
less timid
voice
would say.
Let’s see—
to speak my mind,
despite
the clamor
of inner doubts
and outer noise,
is a change
I would
embrace,
to begin with.
Maybe then
I wouldn’t
shy away
from
sharing my opinions,
regardless
of the ears
unwilling
to listen.
Maybe then
I would
raise concerns
without
waiting for permission
from anyone.
To speak my mind,
a little louder,
louder than usual—
even if
no one cares—
to show that I care
about
speaking up,
instead of
dismissing my thoughts
as fragments
of imagination,
or intrusions
with no place
in this busy world.
I would rather
my voice
be
an uncalled
expression
of self-love
standing out
in a world
that often
wants
to blend in.

Beautiful, honest and true! Loved it, Vinitha! It’s what we all nurture within us and as we age, somehow I feel this courage begins to appear. I guess as the years go, our courage gets more opportunities to allow us to open up to the possibilities…I hope you find yours too, Vinitha. It’s very therapeutic when that happens.

Beautiful poem, VInitha, and one that I can so relate to. Just the kind of things that I want to change about myself. 🙂

Love this, Vini. Yes, there’s the temptation to put on a brave face, but delving deeper as you did makes us more vulnerable but also more honest and open to healing. Love the last lines. Powerful stuff. ♥
