Void Thoughts

It’s a new year after all — 
let’s flip the pages
with prayers and promises as always — 
even though we know
some of those promises
will be broken
right at the start.

Even though we know
it’s not exactly a fresh start
as we claim it to be,
because the weight of yesterdays
is sitting right beside you and me.

But let’s pretend that this page
of our life is indeed fresh,
even if only to look back in the end
at the smudges we created — 
a bit fondly, a bit disheartened.

It’s a new year after all!
