Since the day I turned 30, I hear many of my other 30-year-old friends talking about getting old. I too expected to feel old and was a little scared at the thought of turning 30 during my 27, 28, 29 year-old birthdays.
Here I am, 32 now, I don’t feel any older. I mean, wisdom wise, yeah I have grown pretty old. 😉 But I can’t relate to what my fellow 30-year-old friends talk about. 29 to 30 is just one year difference. How can a year make you feel so old? I always disagree when people say that we are getting old. I am not old. Neither do I feel old. I am not scared to be old either, now that I found out that whatever age you are in you have to earn it to reach there. Every age is good and brings in new challenges and hopes. Birthdays can only be celebrated.
And I don’t agree that age has anything to do with health. You can be a very young person, still not at your best, health wise. You can be 85-year-old, still catering to yours and others need without external help. Or you can be a 30-year-old person, at your best health, still feeling old because that’s what you believe. Or you can be 40-year-old, denying that you are 40, persuading others to believe that you are just 25 because you think you look 25.
You don’t have to be at sweet 16 to feel young. Feeling young or old is a state of mind. Or maybe that’s why 30-year-olds feel old. Probably they don’t have to turn 75 to feel old as it is the state of their mind.
One week into 32, and I have grown an inch on wisdom level. 🙂 Don’t you agree?

It really is a state of mind, Vinitha 🙂
Sadly, some of us don’t gain the wisdom either 😀

It’s all in the mind and the columns we read in the silly magazines. I don’t really feel much difference except for an exponential increase in wisdom as you pointed out. 🙂

I believe age is just a number! I have been boring and lazy even as a 16 year old, so if I go by the world’s logic I was born old..So , yes I’m with you on my thoughts about age 🙂

Brilliantly written…couldn’t agree more. Being old is more within than outside !!

I am 27 as of today and like you said I feel no difference. I completely agree that feeling young or old is a state of mind. With my current state of mind I feel I am just 23 😛

This is my fav topic at any time of the year. I am scared of aging only because I feel age will bring me closer to death. So, I think it’s mortality that worries me. I am also 30+ – I don’t see a change in being 29, 30 or 31. Age is just a number. Isn’t it? I had written a post on this – https://happinessandfood.wordpress.com/2014/07/16/age-is-just-a-number/ Read when you get time 🙂

Ha — you are older and wiser.
I feel old sometimes. Especially when I see people just starting out in getting their adult lives started. My hair is going grey. If I don’t look in the mirror, I feel young. But then I look in the mirror and remember that I’m not 20 anymore.

I turned 50 a couple of weeks ago, and unlike many of my high school classmates, I didn’t feel the doom & gloom descending upon me. Many people have remarked that my husband and I seem like we’re in our 30s, not 50s – I think it’s as you said – feeling young or old is a state of mind. Oh, and I think you grew at least an inch and a half, wisdom-wise, with this post. 😀

Absolutely, Traci. Feeling young or old is a state of mind. And feeling old when you are young is a dangerous state; I am sure that those remarks about you is true. 🙂 It very well be the reflection of your mind. 🙂

This is my favourite topic and how much I wish we could meet in person to discuss this. The chat would never end then. I have my story about this age thing. I have always had this belief strangely, while growing up and later being a grown up too, that everyone else around me was elder to me. This way I always believed I was very young 😀
Turning 30 was special for me because that was the year Dhruv was born, one month earlier than my 30th birthday. And from that day I have begun to count my age afresh so this makes me 4 year old. On the other hand I like being 34 discovering my strengths which I never had in my 20s. So I am aging stronger not older.

Actually older makes you stronger, right? I hear people talkingolder as getting weaker. And I feel that is wrong. I like the wayyou count your age from the time Dhruv was born, Anamika. And in a way it’s true. I am getting to experience a 5 and half year old’s excitements at this age. 🙂

The older I get, the less it matters to me how ‘old’ I am. I turned 30 last December. I don’t feel any older now than I did this time last year. I felt ‘older’ turning 20 from my teens, than I felt turning 30. So you see it is really only a state of mind. 🙂

Right, Shantala. Age should not be feared with. And aging should make us wiser and stronger. And if that happened with less grey hairs, I would have been happy. But hey, another reason to change my hair color. 😉

I just turned twenty nine two days ago and the fact that I’ll be turning thirty next year doesn’t bother me at all. Age is a number and it is all about how old your mind is.
But ofcourse there always will be those cribbers who get cold feet about turning twenty five. I feel like throwing things at such people 😛

I think it is mostly because of the fear of unknown. I have health issues, but I don’t like to blame it on my age, because I know my age has nothing to do with my back pain and migraine. Each birthday is a reward, a token to enjoy the next one! 🙂

18 till I die !!! 😀 but the grey hair sometimes scare me … being 30 I now believe that it’s all in the mind… As long as we are healthy and happy, age doesn’t matter.

Absolutely! Age is not a barrier to feel young and healthy. 🙂

Lot more wisdome than a 28 year old for sure 😉 Maturity and age are unrelated. My nine year old can stun me with her Maturity sometimes. Other times I get it from a friend who is years younger. Age is only a number. Maturity is an experience.

Yes, age is just a number. I just can’t accept it when people talk about 30s as an old age state. Plus the negativity associated with being old is difficult to digest for me.

Quite an interesting post, Vinitha 🙂
The sentence, ‘ I am not scared to be old either, now that I found out that whatever age you are in you have to earn it to reach there.’ says it all…
I totally agree with your views and firmly believes that it’s all about our mind.
Thanks a lot for sharing 🙂
