Not My Typical Monday

It’s true, hearing someone go through something and experiencing that something yourself are two different things altogether.

Sunday afternoon, my Microsoft account got hacked, and I lost all my data.

My son lost three years’ worth of gaming progress. We lost 16 years of data that we had gathered—our photos, documents, my notes in OneNote, everything that was in OneDrive. I can’t access my account as the hackers have disabled my email ID.

I am trying to recover my account by connecting with Microsoft. No progress yet though.

It’s a terrible thing to go through, but I am hoping for the best, although I am mighty worried.

It all happened when my son asked me to enter my user details on his phone, as he normally plays on my Microsoft ID. I was in the middle of chores, so as exasperated as I was, I didn’t ask him more questions. I didn’t know at that time that he was trying to get into a new server. It was then that his gaming account was taken over by the hackers and subsequently my account.

It was our fault, but it was a terrifying moment of reality.

We’ve reported to the cybercrime division but have yet to hear from them.

I am finding peace that although my account got hacked we were able to minimize the implications as much as possible. Our kids are aware of the risky online gaming scene now. They are learning the importance of protecting their accounts.

I am tired after going through all our accounts and resetting passwords. It’s a lot of work. We are accumulating so much data online.

Moral of the story: Never click any unknown link.

  1. This is a terrible and scary thing to happen, Vinitha. Never click an unknown link is the wisest but still this can happen to anyone the moment the caution goes a bit down.

    1. Very true, Anamika. It’s not possible to be on alert all the time. But we need to be beware and not click on links that could take us into a dark and scary path. It’s a harsh lesson.

    1. Last week was a terrible one, Corinne. Our lost data is all gone and we haven’t heard even a word from Microsoft. I have my worries about the misuse of our data, but keeping the hope that the universe will have our back. Hugs back. ❤️
