By now, she should’ve been used to the constant moving and the uncertainty that came with it.
Her mom was never comfortable staying in one place for more than a year or two. It had something to do with her dad—someone she never knew, and someone they never spoke about.
She’d made good friends in the last place they lived. She felt like a kid again there, rather than being invisible and blended into the background the way her mother preferred.
She wondered what her life would be like in the new place. Wasn’t that an adventure too, one that not everyone got to experience?

Wow! I like how you weaved the plot with suspense and with a tinge of sadness for the little girl! How tiring it must be for the mom to keep running away from one place to another!! I’m sure the kid will get to find out about this soon.

What a toll such movement without explanation take on children. This short story of yours reminded me of a Leah Griffith’s Cosette’s Tribe for some reason.

I read about Leah Griffith’s story, Corinne. Sounds sad. You are so right about adults not realizing the impact of their decisions on little children even if it is the wisest thing according to them in their situation.

My idea of the back-story – The father is a Columbian Drug Lord. The mother disapproves of his ways. One night she escaped the tall fences of the mansion with her teenage daughter. Now they are on the move all the time. The mother fears of his shadows lurking around her, behind her. The daughter now grown up in her 20s with her wish to mingle with the world will soon give out their whereabouts. The guns are soon coming without the roses.

Your back-story fits so well 🙂

My heart goes out to the mother-daughter duo, who have to save themselves from the man who should have been a caring partner/father instead of the monster that he is.
Will this story have a sequel, Vinitha?
