Time will heal. That’s what everyone kept saying. But she knew the truth. She was an exception.

It’s been 9 years. With each passing year she felt his absence tremendously.

She felt betrayed as she was forced to live with the memories of her baby. Losing him in her womb made her wound an irreparable one.

The healing power of time never reached her distraught heart.

Morning air had a peculiar softness in it as if it had realized that everything else in her life was rough. Niya felt pity on herself.

Pity – lately that’s the one feeling she is in touch with.

Anything good happens to her, she chooses to see it as a charity.

As the morning sun gleamed in the distance, Niya had a sudden urge to stop pitying herself. Even if the universe is throwing these blissful moments at her as a pity, it’s on her to make it to her advantage.

She was done with playing the victim role that moment.

“Please let me out!” his voice echoed in the room. “I will not bother you. I promise. ”

His scream filled with fear and desperation made her smile.

He will never escape, such was her handiwork. Jailed inside the mirror all he could do was cry.

The day started on a dull note today. It was raining heavily since early morning.

A faint sign of sun was alive somewhere beneath those dark clouds, much like hope in her mind.

All she could count on was the fact that after a heartfelt pouring, eventually the rain will stop, and then, the sun will shine again.

Today will give way to tomorrow, hope gleamed within her.

He was nice. Different. Butterflies fluttered inside her stomach at this thought.

She longed for someone who was different from others. Someone who cared. He could be the one, the one who cared.

She decided to let him in. Did he spot the BEWARE sign hanging on the way to her mind? Surely he should. He will be punished of course, if he overlooks the warning.

But she had hope, this little pup was definitely different from the other gentlemen bloke who broke her heart.

The ash tree which stood majestically right outside Dana’s window showed signs of the impending change of season. In a few weeks, the tree would put on the prettiest shades of yellow and red, and soon will shed leaves revealing the branches in minimal covering.

She wondered if the tree felt somewhat shy in displaying its tentacles out in the open like that! Would it then crave for the company of leaves that blanketed the branches now, like she was craving for her favorite pals?

But then baring its soul is just a one season phenomenon for the tree. Unlike her, who was forced to coop inside her house since Spring brought new buds. The pandemic stopped her from visiting her favorite place, the library.

This new normal was stretching from season to season like the frigid limbs of a leafless tree extend with uncertainty as if it is frozen in time.

Dana’s heart ached to get back to the corridors of the library that held bookshelves carrying rows of books dear to her. She and her beloved companions would be separated for how many more seasons, who knew!

It was a beautiful morning. Lexi loved taking a stroll in her garden on such crisp mornings.

She spotted the new bloom of rose shyly sprouting in the garden next to her other cherished roses of different colors. This yellow rose was her latest accomplishment.

“Hey, you!” she ran her fingers over the little bud gently. ” Nice of you to join us. Welcome to my world, Daniel. Meet your predecessors Jake, Matt, Davis and Shawn. Shawn was my first.”

The soil where the roses sprouted hid the bodies of her dates safely.

I stood close by the church building admiring the beautiful day. A jolt of happiness enveloped me suddenly.

Indeed, today I’m happy beyond measure. I could feel those butterflies fluttering inside my stomach. After all, he is coming to see me today.

It was a long wait. I didn’t enjoy this never-ending wait. He had promised that he will come. But he failed to say when exactly. So I waited.

My intuition said that today is the day and it wasn’t a mere hope in vain. See, he is here. As soon as the ceremony is over, we will start our new life together, a life in eternity in this cemetery!

The blank page stared at him. It could very well be accepted as a sign to end his writing career before it even started.
He sighed.
A blank page is also a sign to write something, he decided.
That was the beginning of his writing career.

Fiction Monday

The curtain swayed as the air conditioning unit came to life. Athira opened her eyes. It was still dark outside. She let out a sigh of relief. Her headache didn’t subside and she didn’t want to wake up yet.

As she closed her eyes in an effort to go back to sleep, she heard a noise again. These nights without Raj made her uncomfortable. But this being yet another trip that her husband couldn’t avoid, she had to endure yet another night alone.

The door creeked open gently. Athira alarmingly sat up on her bed.

“Did I wake you up, Amma? Oh no! I’m sorry! I wanted it to be a surprise to you!” Her seven-year-old son, Athul was disappointed.

“What happened, dear? Are you okay?” She replied.

Athul slowly placed the breakfast tray in front of her on the bed. “Happy birthday, Amma!”

More than the heart meticulously crafted on the bread, she was moved by her son’s gesture. He woke up early to make sure that his mom will get his present first thing that day.
