“Happy anniversary,” Sharath whispered into Niya’s ear as soon as she opened her eyes.
She smiled, rubbing her eyes, before leaning in and kissing him as she wished him a happy anniversary too.
“You never give me a chance to wish you first,” she said. “Here I thought we were at the stage where you wouldn’t even remember our anniversary date,” she added with a smile.
Sharath hugged her close and replied, “You know I can never forgive myself for not asking you out when I had the chance. But you did. Wishing you every year is how I remind myself of my good fortune, sweetheart.”
“A girl can only wait so long, you know,” she teased him.
“Right. And with that, you rewrote my life. You made a second chance possible. I am a happier man because of that.”
She knew he meant what he said.
It still amazed her sometimes how one small decision could change the course of two lives. She had only taken a chance on him that day, never knowing she was rewriting both their stories.
“You’re welcome,” she replied before kissing him again.
